At Nevens Natuursteen NV we realize that the worktop is an essential part of any kitchen, but specially of a cottage kitchen.

Cottage kitchens get a lot of their charm through the structure and warmth of the materials used to build them.  Wood plays an essential role.  Natural stone, and specially marble, connects in a natural way with wood and both materials strengthen each other esthetically.

Not all marbles are apt to be used as kitchen tops. Sometimes because they are too soft or because they are too porous.  The result would not satisfy our clients.  Nevens Natuursteen NV has selected 5 marbles which are sufficiently hard, provide choise of colour, and are easily mantainable.  Lessons can be drawn from the past as often these very same marbles have been used for centuries as kitchen tops in rural kitchens.  It is wonderfull to see how old kitchen tops have gained even more character due to their use over the years.

Marble is not a static material.  It will change over time as its owner works on the kitchen top.   Marble will not be able to resist the efforts you will exercise on it.  Rather, this natural product will absorb your daily labour and translate your time spent on it into an increasing expression of character.

On the other hand our selection of marbles do guarantee sufficient hardness and an acceptable resistance to stains thanks to its finishing, a basic treatment and maintenance advice.

Your marble choice will depend on your personal taste.  The colour of your kitchen’s woodwork and of the kitchen floor will have to be taken into account. How lifely do you want the textures of the worktop in your kitchen to be?  Last but not least, if you have lots of natural light in your kitchen a darker colour is an option.

The marbles offered by Nevens Natuursteen NV are all of a similar technical quality. Considerations like hardness and sensitivity to staining will therefore not be a differential factor between them.

For any of the five marbles we choose the finest blocks in the quarry.  We select on basis of colour, drawing, intrinsic quality of the stone and general homogenity of its surface.

At Nevens Natuursteen NV we also look out for the biggest possible blocks so that we can offer big slabs to maximalize the possibility to make kitchen tops out of one piece.

But most of all your choice will be guided by your personal sense of beauty.  Get informed by looking into magazines, the web and  kitchens of friends and family.  We hope our proposals will inspire you and help you to imagine your ideal kitchen.

The surface finishing determines very much how the marble will look like.  If the surface is left as good as unpolished its colour will be rather dull and its shades and drawi4F3B0110ngs will not be well visible.  If the surface is polished too much it will shine too intensely.  We do not recommend this for esthetical reasons in cottage kitchens.

The point is that we have to get it just right to make the most of the marble and to create the best esthetical effect for your cottage kitchen.  At Nevens Natuursteen NV we have the experience and knowledge to get the right surface finishing for each of the materials we propose.

The surface finishing determines the final looks of your worktop as much as  the choice of the kind of marble.  The combination of selecting the best quality material and its equilibrated finishing will guarantee the optimal esthetical result for your kitchen worktop.

Once you have decided about the marble you use and its surface finishing we can pay attention to the side finishing (for all the sides of the marble which stay visible).

The first question is how thick we want the marble to be.  Generally the option in marble is 30mm or 50mm.  The first has a positive impact on the overwhole cost price (less use of material) while the second gives your marble worktop a solid and robust look.  We offer Belgian Blue stone in both 30 and 50mm and the other marbles in 50mm.

In general the surface of the sides are finished in the same way as the top part of the worktop. There are some exceptions: gefrijnde en gesclypeerde edges.

web-rand-natuursteen-7These side finishings originate from the time that polishing the stone was not an options because the machinery was non-existing.   This is therefore a true ‘old-style’ finishing which is today very popular.

The form of the sides doesn’t need to be straight.  DSCF0059
It can be half rounded or fully rounded, it can also have a profile. A very popular side finishing is the parrot bek (see picture to the right).

Of course many other profiles are possible like the one in this image of a Bianco Carrara worktop with sink.
